b'Investigation of a Possible Indian Mound using LiDAR and Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR)Abigail Starling, Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geosciences and Engineering Studies Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Donald Thieme, Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geosciences and Engineering StudiesWe evaluate the archaeological and geological content of a possible Indian mound located in North Florida by utilizing contour mapping of LiDAR data along with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) 2D and 3D mapping of the subsurface. The mound is believed to have been built during the Mississippian period (800-1600 CE) due to the widespread practice of mound building indicative of the time. Contour mapping of LiDAR data indicates an elevation of over 65 feet (20 meters) above the surrounding terrain with a surface area of approximately 160 acres (65 ha). If the feature is cultural, it will be the tallest known Indian mound in Florida by over 15 feet.Spatial Analysis of Nursing Homes in South GeorgiaBrandon B. Bell, Richard A. Borzi, Amelia L. Young, Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geosciences and Engineering Studies Faculty Sponsor: Jia Lu, Department of Physics, Astronomy, Geosciences and Engineering StudiesEldercare for senior citizens is a major concern in South Georgia. Studies have shown that residents of rural area and small cities tend to have lower quality senior care and distance to healthcare facilities (such as nursing homes) may be an underlying cause. However, no such study has been conducted for South Georgia, which includes mostly rural area and small cities. The objective of this project is to involve our students in the analysis of senior care facility locations in South Georgia. We collected and assembled location data of nursing homes, hospices, and other senior services into a digital database, and utilized Geographic Information System (GIS) to map all locations. Through map analysis, we conclude that there is a problem for rural and small city residents in South Georgia to access senior care providers. We suggest our government officials to increase accessibility and improve quality of care to senior citizens in South Georgia.64'
