b'Pulmonary Embolism & Deep Vein Thrombosis in Total Knee and Hip Replacement PatientsCarolanne Edwards, Dustin Pickren, Hannah Worth, and Heaven McLaughlin, School of NursingFaculty Sponsor: Donna Corbitt, MSN, RN, School of NursingPulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis is a serious concern in total knee and total hip replacement patients. Our research question is, in post-operative total knee and total hip replacement patients, what is the effect of extended hospital stays on deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism? The lack of education for both the nurses and the patients hinders the research and resolution of this topic. We conducted a review of literature on the topic to isolate specific factors that lead to deep vein thrombosis, in order to find potential solutions to the issue. Within this problem, the occurrence of extended stays in the hospital, is where the exacerbation of the problem is found. With proper education for nurses and patients alike, these never events can be avoided. We have created a practice protocol to address this reoccurring problem. The Effect of Sleep Deprivation on Nursing CareKathryn Combs, Avunna Jennings, TyOnnah Maddox, and Amy Watts, School of NursingFaculty Sponsor: L. Dee Ott DNP, APRN, FNP-C, School of NursingAccording to Sleep Health solutions, 75% of health care workers on alternating shifts have experienced fatigue due to lack of sleep in which has been closely associated with increased risks of medical errors. We have chosen the following research question: among nurses who work in hospitals, how does sleep deprivation effect nursing care? Although extensive research has been gathered and put into effect through the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation Initiative, nurses are still becoming bunt-out and exhausted due to sleep deprivation which results in more and more medical errors effecting nursing care and patient safety. To tackle this issue, we have research and gathered ten evidence-based articles in CINHAL that explain different factors in which errors occur resulting from nurses being sleep deprived. We wrote a practice protocol to address ways to target and manage sleep deprivation among nurses and in the hospital setting. 57'
