b'World War II and the Deaf Community Sydney Boucugnani, Honors College Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Cheryl Tillman, Honors CollegeThis paper examines the effects of World War II on the Deaf community around the world. This historical research paper involves studying, understanding and interpreting past events to further understand the impact on the Deaf community. The purpose of historical research is to reach insights or conclusions about how the past affected the Deaf community and impacted future events as well.Mathematics Using Cayley Tables to Visualize GroupsJoanne Wardell, Department of Computer Science Faculty Sponsor:Dr. Denise Reid and Dr. Jos Vlez Marulanda Department of MathematicsA group is a set of elements that are closed under an associative operation that includes both an identity and an inverse for each element.A Cayley Table is used to describe an operation on a finite group.Using colors to represent individual elements in the set enables one to recognize properties of the group.Using Java programming, color images were created to represent some groups. We will explore these images and discuss how some of the properties of each group are shown in the images.Design a Fairer Spelling BeeJon Liu and Joyce Liu Lowndes High School Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Jemal Mohammed-Awel, Department of MathematicsThe elimination rules in the spelling bee are known to be unfair due to the spellers order to spell their words. Spellers who are earlier in the list of competitors to spell their words are more likely to be eliminated than spellers who spell their words later. Mathematical analysis and computer simulations show that later spellers have more of an advantage on the probability to become the champion than earlier spellers even if their spelling ability is at the same level. The harder the words are, the larger the advantage is. In this paper, we propose some changes to the rules and show that these changes make the spelling bee fairer to all spellers.47'
