Communication Arts/Mass MediaIdentity Speaks: A Theory on Identitys Place in Public SpeakingBryanna Tucker, Department of Communication ArtsFaculty Sponsor: Dr. Michael Eaves, Department of Communication ArtsPublic speaking is the number one fear in America. Death is listed at number five. I think the fear of public speaking surpasses the fear of death because death is a final one-time occurrence, whereas giving presentations is a requirement for almost every course. I am proposing that speech apprehension has less to do with the audience and more to do with what the speaker is giving to them. Students should be presenting themselves to an audience within the content of their speeches. The willingness to make their identities vulnerable is the key to connecting with the audience, which then allows the speaker to give a more effective and memorable speech. Through textual analysis, interviews, and observations, this study seeks to examine how much influence the constant construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction of identity has on a persons ability to maintain originality in public speaking and how can we change the way college students approach public speaking?29'
