b'The Relationship between Laryngopharngeal Reflux, Body Composition, and Exercise Habits in Student AthletesMonique Nichole Lawson, College of Nursing and Health SciencesFaculty Sponsor: Dr. Matthew Carter, Department of Communication Sciences and DisordersThis study investigated the association between BMI, exercise habits, and laryngopharyngeal reflux in athletes. Data from 13 intercollegiate athletes (mean age =20 years) were compared with 14 college students who did not participate in collegiate sports (mean age =23). Height and weight were measured as well as body composition using the BodPod. Self-reported ratings of overall health, smoking classification, and alcohol consumption were recorded. The Reflux Finding Score (RFS) was administered using rigid stroboscopy as well as the self-reported Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) to assess the presence of laryngopharyngeal reflux. Significant differences between the groups were related to BMI, alcohol consumption, RSI, and RFS. Measures indicate that athletes were more likely to experience symptoms of reflux than non-athletes. In addition, the self reported number of alcoholic beverages consumed per week was most associated with the presence of reflux.
