As such, our faculty focuses on teaching students the critical thinking, problem-solving, and learning skills necessary for today’s marketing and advertising practitioners and executives.

Africana Studies, an academic discipline, offers an intellectual approach to the study of African people both nationally and globally. Thus, it seeks to provide historically accurate assessments of the roles and contributions of people of African descent to America and to human history. As as interdisciplinary program, this minor offers students the opportunity to communicate more effectively across cultural lines as well as to explore the social, political, and economic reality of the black experience in the United States. In addition, the minor encourages creative research, the acquisition of practical experiences, and the development of intellectual expertise in Africana Studies. 

The certificate program in Africana Studies is designed to increase knowledge of experiences of people of African descent in the United States and across the globe.  It provides an opportunity to gain credentials in the field and serves to enhance cultural competency for working professionals and undergraduate students. Four courses, from the array of courses in Africana Studies, are required for completion of the certificate and are offered both online and on campus.

A new Minor in Biology will be available starting in fall 2017. The minor requires fifteen hours of upper division biology courses including genetics, ecology and evolution, and eight hours of upper division biology electives.

The Department of English at Valdosta State University offers two "add on" certificate programs designed specifically for individuals who have earned a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in another related field, but who would like to teach concurrent enrollment and beginning undergraduate courses in English at a college level without seeking an additional, full MA in English.

As opposed to a full 36-credit-hour MA degree, the certificate programs require 18 credit hours of graduate coursework. The program is expected to be completed in approximately two years or fewer; however, students have up to seven years to complete the program at their own pace.

Courses are offered by distinguished professors with Graduate Status (Ph.D. and publication in their fields of expertise), several recipients of university teaching, and online teaching awards.

A minor in Deaf Studies was established by Valdosta State University to provide students with knowledge and skills in American Sign Language (ASL) as well as Deaf Culture, linguistics. Students pursing a minor in Deaf Studies are exposed to the uniqueness of ASL as a world language while acquiring cultural knowledge that will enable them to successfully interact with the American Deaf community. The curriculum is designed to promote a cultural and linguistic understanding of Deaf individuals while encouraging students to analyze existing stereotypes pertaining to this population, so they in turn, can effectively educate hearing members of society.

The Deaf Studies Minor is housed in the Department of Teacher Education and is part of the ASL and Deaf Education programs.

Learning opportunities develop academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The public is most familiar with dental hygienists in the private dental office, where they perform numerous critical services designed to detect and prevent diseases of the mouth. These include oral prophylaxis; assessing the head, neck, and oral areas for signs of disease; educating patients about oral hygiene; taking x-rays; and applying fluoride and sealants. In this setting, registered dental hygienists play a vital role in protecting the oral health of the American public. Program graduates receive a Dental Hygiene Associate of Applied Science degree.

Valdosta State University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) initial certification program in either Middle Grades or Secondary Education, with two curriculum tracks. This program is designed for those who obtained an undergraduate degree in majors other than education.

The Employed Teacher track is for those who are currently teaching on a non-renewable (provisional) certificate. It is designed as a two year program; at the end of the first year a candidate may be recommended for initial renewable certification (T-4) and at the end of the second year a candidate may earn a master's degree (M.A.T.) with a T-5 certification.

The Full-Time Student track of the M.A.T. is a fifth year program beyond a bachelor's degree and is a full-time day time program in which candidates may earn a master's degree (M.A.T.) and renewable teaching certification in four semesters. Cohort groups begin in June or January.

The Educational Specialist’s Degree in Educational Leadership program is a comprehensive program of study including course work and related clinical experiences leading to a Tier II Georgia certificate in Educational Leadership.  The Education Specialist’s Degree program incorporates clinical practice linking theoretical and philosophical frameworks of educational leadership to actual practice.  Through the combination of course work and performance-based activities, candidates will be able to develop the necessary competencies to become an educational leader.

Through the combination of course work and field experiences, candidates will be able to develop the necessary competencies to become an entry-level leader.  The primary goal of the Internship Experience in the Master’s Degree or Certification-Only (Tier 1) Educational Leadership program is to link the theoretical and philosophical frameworks of educational leadership to actual practice.  This is accomplished with field experiences included as a part of the candidate’s program of study and documented through the candidate’s Inventory of Leadership Experience (ILE).

The Certification-Only Tier I Educational Leadership program is a comprehensive program of study including course work and related field experiences leading to a Tier I Georgia certificate in Educational Leadership. Candidates participating in the certification-only program may add the Tier I educational leadership certificate to an existing Level 5 Georgia certificate by completing the elements of this program not completed in another master’s program.

The Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Elementary Education prepares teacher candidates to teach and support students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade in the field of elementary education. Successful completion of the program leads to a Georgia Professional Standards Commission Induction Level – T-4 certification in Elementary Education (P-5). 

The M.Ed. in Elementary Education program is fully online. Candidates will gain a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, research, and dominant theories of elementary education to support effective teaching of young children. The program also builds a strong link to classroom instruction and implementation of knowledge and skills in elementary school settings.

The B.S. in Engineering Technology degree with a concentration in Industrial Engineering Technology at VSU is a multi-disciplinary track that involves many lecture-based courses related to engineering, math, statistics, computer science, and business. Management graduates move into positions of responsibility in large and small organizations.  They are prepared for careers in manufacturing, retail, and service industries as well as government and not-for-profit organizations.

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary minor focusing on how human systems have impacted the natural world. Our program draws from a variety of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that provide students with a wide range of perspectives on environmental issues. These issues are becoming a focus in public and private sectors.

The certificate in European Union Studies is operated under the supervision of the European Council of the University System of Georgia. The program is open to all institutions and students of the University System as well as to professionals with an undergraduate degree. The program’s purpose is to promote knowledge of the European Union (EU) and certify individuals as competent in the subject area of EU studies. Since the EU is the most important economic and political partner of the United States, this certification demonstrates valuable professional expertise to potential employers. For students in the academic track, the interdisciplinary certificate can be earned as a supplement to any conventional undergraduate degree. The certificate can be earned fully online or by taking approved traditional classroom courses, or with a combination of traditional and online courses.

Exercise Physiology is the study of acute and chronic adaptations associated with physical activity and exercise training.  The major comprises the study of how exercise impacts health and human performance and prescribing individualized exercise programs to meet participant health, fitness and human performance goals. A degree in exercise physiology serves as a pathway to direct employment and provides prerequisite education to pursue advanced study at the graduate level. If a future career involves movement, allied health, or medicine then a degree in exercise physiology is an excellent credential.

Graduates are employed in fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports performance, cardiopulmonary and oncology rehabilitation, clinical exercise physiology, dietetics, sports nutrition, medicine (physician, physician assistant), pharmaceutical sales, health coaching, education, and many more. (note:  Careers may require advanced degree beyond a BS in exercise physiology.)

Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (FPMHNP) are advanced practice registered nurses who assess, diagnose, and treat mental health issues across the lifespan through pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic interventions. FPMHNPs work in clinical settings that include private, state or Veterans Administration in-patient or outpatient psychiatric facilities, private psychiatric practices, and community mental health centers. PMHMPs also provide services in settings such as correctional facilities, domestic violence shelters, residential substance abuse facilities, and schools.

The field of finance focuses on how businesses, organizations, government entities and individuals raise, spend and invest capital and examines the way in which financial markets function. A Minor in Geography is available to students of all majors. It consists of two specific core courses (GEOG 1112k and GEOG 1113k) and at least nine hours of upper-division elective courses. The Master of Arts in Teaching in Health and Physical Education program is an opportunity for college graduates who hold a bachelor's degree or more advanced degree in a content area from an accredited college or university to earn a master's degree in education and be recommended for a Georgia clear renewable T-5 teaching certificate. This is a 36-credit hour masters degree program requiring extensive field experiences and college course work. This program is designed for the preparation of teachers for core academic areas of health and physical education. Two options are available. Track one is for candidates who are current educators seeking certification in HPE and track two is for individuals who are not employed in education.

The Master of Education degree (M.Ed.) with a Major in Health and Physical Education prepares students to teach health and physical education from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Completion of the M.Ed program meets GaPSC standards for a T-5 certification. Candidates must currently hold a valid teaching certificate to enroll in the M.Ed. 

The minor in Health and Physical Education is designed to develop your attitudes and behaviors by focusing on current health issues and strategies. Since the inception of the I-O Program at VSU in 1984, our students have had a high success rate in acquiring jobs in human resources, research, and human services. Part of the success of our students can be attributed to the opportunities provided by on-site practicum experiences. Students have served as human-resource interns with local, regional, national, and international organizations in manufacturing, human services, health care, civil service, banking, and government contracting. The opportunity for on-site experience is further enhanced by VSU's Office of Cooperative Education.

Students and faculty in the I-O program staff Azalea Consulting, a vibrant consultation service that assists regional companies, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies to solve critical administrative issues. Students learn to assist organizations with the creation, implementation, and evaluation of core functions such as strategic planning, HR development, personnel selection, and job analysis. Students and faculty work together to strategically solve workplace challenges using the latest technology and data resources, combined with a creative and collaborative approach.

Each student is required to complete 45 semester-hours for the Master of Science degree in I-O Psychology. These requirements include 6 credit hours of on-site practicum experience. Completion of a master’s thesis is optional, but recommended for those preparing for doctoral study.

It is an inventive program of study that qualifies students to take the Media Specialist GACE and apply for certification in School Library Media at the level of certification they bring to the program. A level upgrade to Level 6 is, however a potential result of successful completion of the program because of the instructional technology core of the program that leads to certification in Instructional Technology. Interdisciplinary Studies is a program which allows you, the student, to be in control of designing your educational program. The degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, is comprised of two or three academic Areas of Emphasis (21 credit hours each or 15 credit hours each, respectively). You may choose from any discipline offered as a major or minor at VSU. Within each Area of Emphasis, you may use a maximum of one lower level course (1000-2000); the remaining courses must be upper level (3000-4000) and all must have a grade of "C" or better.

The field of interior design is about connecting people to the spaces where they live, work, learn and play. Interior designers address the visual, technical and aesthetic aspects of inhabited spaces, integrating art and design concepts, utilizing space analysis and planning, and employing their knowledge of materials, furnishings and construction to produce finished interior environments that serve the specific needs of their clients.

The international business minor combines coursework in economics, finance, management, marketing and general business with cross-cultural studies and study abroad to create future leaders in global business. Valdosta State University’s minor in international studies provides students with a fundamental understanding of international studies as an academic field and highlights the dynamics involved in international affairs. The Journalism minor prepares students for careers in print journalism, editing, and in-house news writing. The minor in Journalism at Valdosta State offers courses in writing for newspapers, magazines, sports and features, with opportunities for publication through a close curriculum relationship with the student newspaper, The Spectator.

This institutional certificate allows Journalism and Mass Media students to develop skills and cross-training in the areas, providing opportunities for greater employability and professional development. To complete, Mass Media majors or minors are required to take 3 Journalism courses; English majors with a Journalism emphasis must take 3 Mass Media courses.

The development of the understanding of at least one culture other than their own and communicative proficiency in the language of that culture is an essential element in the educational preparation for citizens who live in the global society of the 21st century. Courses in Latin American studies are offered in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and focus on the acquisition of language skills and cultural knowledge that enable individuals to live or travel in a society where the language is spoken. The doctoral program in leadership (Ed.D.) develops capable, ethical, and diverse leaders who wish to effectively lead 21st century educational institutions and other organizations. Managers work in a variety of fields including retail, industry, hospitality, production, human resources and more and are essential figures in the success of these organizations. Many managers go on to successfully open and operate their own businesses.

Marketing professionals are responsible for promoting products and services, while keeping in mind the needs and desires of their customers. All types of organizations need to market themselves and their products and services, and as a result, opportunities abound for marketing majors. Students in the Valdosta State University marketing program develop a number of skills and become experts in the areas of problem solving, planning and forecasting, research and analysis, and persuasion. Students who complete the major in Middle Grades will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree. VSU’s Middle Grades program is approved by Georgia’s Professional Standards Commission, Georgia’s teacher certifying agency. All Middle Grades majors complete the core curriculum, Areas A-F, with area F being specific to Middle Grades concentration areas. Twenty-four hours in the major are also dedicated to the chosen concentration areas. Upon acceptance into teacher education, students have major specific courses. Upon graduation, students are Middle Grades certification eligible.

The Department of Aerospace Studies is the United States Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) detachment at VSU. Students seeking a commission into the active duty Air Force will take classes aimed at developing leadership, fostering teamwork, military history, and understanding the role of the US Air Force in national defense. The academic portion of AFROTC is also open to students who wish to only take the academic component without pursuing a commission.

The music department at Valdosta State University prepares students to have lifelong careers as musicians, music educators or professionals who work in the field of music.

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music (Education Track) does not lead to teacher certification. Students who complete the degree program have the opportunity to apply to the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Music Education. Successful completion of the MAT will enable them to apply for initial teacher certification in Music Education.

They also plan work assignments for staff, supervise staff, request new office equipment and make repairs on existing equipment. The office administration and technology program at Valdosta State University prepares students for administrative, supportive and supervisory positions in business or industrial settings, professional offices, public institutions, and government agencies.

The fully online B.S.Ed. program in elementary education prepares students to become professional educators certified in Georgia to teach preschool through 5th grade students.

The Online Teaching Endorsement program prepares candidates to plan, design, and deliver instruction in online environments for learners in P-12 settings. The endorsement is approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GPSC) and is available for candidates who already hold a valid teaching certificate. The add-on endorsement is based on successful completion of three courses, successful completion of a field-based practicum, and evidence of accomplishment of all items on an Online Teaching Endorsement Competency Checklist.

The Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Special Education is designed for practicing special educators who hold a master's degree in special education (or related field such as speech language pathology, deaf education, vocational rehabilitation, or adapted physical education) who wish to advance their professional skills in special education. Information and skills in special education acquired and developed at the undergraduate and master’s level in special education are specifically designed for and focused on the provision of services.
