Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree program prepares students for the healthcare industry, currently one of the strongest employment sectors nationally. The program helps students to identify talents and interests in the field that can be developed within the program, leading to careers in fields such as medical assistance, health coaching, health education specialist, healthcare informatics, marketing and public relations, medical and pharmaceutical sales, occupational health and safety specialist, patient advocacy, public health, health education, and environmental health.

The degree program can also lead to graduate-level study in healthcare fields such as anesthesiologist assistant, athletic training, dentistry, exercise physiology, medicine, occupational therapy, optometry, physical therapy, and physician assistant, as well as nursing (as a second degree). Specific prerequisites are required depending on the specific healthcare field chosen.

Program Map

This map is a term-by-term sample of a course schedule. The milestones listed below each term are designed to keep students on course to graduate in four years (or less if pursuing the accelerated Health Sciences course progression) and be prepared to pursue a selected career field in healthcare.

Admission into the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) degree program is based upon the following:

• Student is a declared BSHS major.

• Student has a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 or higher.

• Completion of all core IMPACTS curriculum coursework with a satisfactory grade based on institutional policy.

• Completion of all Field of Study courses with a grade of C or higher.

 

Students are admitted into the BSHS program in either fall or spring semester (no summer admission option). Students can elect to follow one of the following paths:

• Traditional BSHS program that does not include taking summer courses or

• Accelerated BSHS program which includes four back-to-back semesters, including courses in the summer.

Milestones: Maintain an overall 2.0 GPA or higher. Complete Field Course of Study (FCS) courses with a C or higher. Accumulate 60 or more collegiate credits. Continue to research potential programs of professional career interest along with their admission standards (minimum GPA, prerequisite coursework, required entrance exams, etc.) Begin selecting core electives and FCS courses to meet prerequisites for post-undergraduate programs. Seek shadowing opportunities with professionals working in the field that you intend to pursue.
