Scholarships Available

Scholarships are a great way to help students pay for college without having to incur additional debt. Scholarships can come from any organization, such as a church, business, fraternity/sorority, government, etc. The VSU Foundation and University Scholarships are established by private donors and awarded each year to students with excellent academic achievement and/or those students with financial need.

Apply in Scholarship Universe

VSU is happy to announce the availability of Scholarship Universe, a new scholarship search and application platform.  Students can now apply for VSU and VSU Foundation Scholarships and search for external scholarships on one cloud based scholarship application system.  We encourage students to search and apply for available  scholarship options using Scholarship Universe.

The Scholarship Universe Applications for the 2024-2025 academic year will start to become  available October 2, 2023.  Check Scholarship Universe for opening and deadline dates for specific scholarships.

Students who have been accepted for admission can access Scholarship Universe using your VSU Log In Credentials.

Scholarship Universe Guide

Types of Scholarships

Common types of scholarships are merit-based scholarships, but there are also scholarships that are based on financial need, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work.

  • Merit Based Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, potential, leadership skills, extracurricular activities, community service and individual scholarship criteria regardless of financial need.
  • Need Based Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need.

For consideration of need-based scholarships, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as they can and list VSU as an institution of intent (VSU’s Title IV School Code is 001599). Additional requirements for need based scholarships include leadership skills, community involvement and individual scholarship criteria will also be considered.

Regardless of your family’s income or your potential eligibility for a scholarship, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all other financial aid documents required by the VSU Office of Financial Aid.

Students should read each scholarship description carefully. Some scholarships require the student to contact the donor or department directly to obtain application information.

Be wary of scholarships that require some form of payment; this is not generally within the spirit of scholarship giving and is not recommended by the Office of Financial Aid.

How to apply for scholarships

Most scholarships offered through VSU can be applied for through our new scholarship application platform called Scholarship Universe.  Most scholarship deadlines are early in the Spring semester for the following academic year. For example, completing the application in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 will apply for aid in the 2024-2025 academic year which begins Fall 2024.

The Scholarship Universe Applications for the 2024-2025 academic year will start to become  available October 2, 2023.  Check Scholarship Universe for opening and deadline dates for specific scholarships.
