Dental Hygiene (A.A.S.)
Dear Pre-Dental Hygiene Major: This map is a term-by-term sample course schedule. The milestones listed below each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. One sample schedule is provided as a general guideline to help you build a schedule each term. Your courses must be selected with your advisor to satisfy all core curriculum and state, lab science, and multicultural requirements.
Please not that dental hygiene students are admitted to the clinical program once annually through a competitive admissions process. Students admitted to the clinical training program will attend all courses on the Wiregrass campus located at 40789 Val Tech Road, Valdosta, GA 31602. Wiregrass campus is conveniently located at Exit 22 on I-75.
According to the American Dental Association, Dental Hygiene is of one of the 30 fastest growing occupations. Dental hygienists are licensed healthcare professionals who work with dentists to promote oral health through preventive care, education, and treatment. They clean teeth, examine for diseases, take x-rays, provide local anesthesia, and educate patients on proper oral hygiene. While most commonly recognized in the private dental practice, registered dental hygienists work in a variety of professional settings. Dental hygiene graduates can go on to become clinical dental hygienists, educators, researchers, public health hygienists, and enter corporate roles.
Students who complete the dental hygiene program will graduate from Valdosta State University with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene. In order to qualify for licensure in dental hygiene, students must successfully complete all clinical requirements, as well as pass the Dental Hygiene National Board and the Dental Hygiene ADEX clinical exam.
The cooperative dental hygiene program fully is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
