OCCA Students

Students enrolled in the Online College for Career Advancement (OCCA) are issued laptops for the term of enrollment at Valdosta State University. Upon completion of or withdrawal from the program, the laptop must be returned to VSU. Students are responsible for the protection of the laptop while it is in their care.

Request a Laptop:

  1. Contact your OCCA Advisor/Enrollment Coach.
  2. They will send you an email with an electronic agreement form to complete and submit.
  3. Once processed, we will ship your laptop to the address provided on your agreement form.
  4. Once received, learn how to secure your data and protect your device. 

Return a Laptop:

  1. Contact your OCCA Advisor/Enrollment Coach.
  2. We will send you a return label and shipping box free of charge.
  3. Prior to returning, save any files stored locally on the computer to another storage solution such as Microsoft OneDrive or a personal USB drive.
  4. Upon receipt, we will restore the device to the manufacturer settings. All files and settings will be lost.

Tech Support:

  • Technology Services PortalThis is your hub for seeking technology assistance 24/7 through a ticket system. It offers not only a multitude of self-help guides, but also allows you to create and check the status of your help requests. As an added convenience, you can add the Technology Services Portal to the Quick Links section of your MyVSU account for easy access.

    We offer live support over the phone through our VSU Solutions Center during business hours. When you call, be sure to let them know that you are an OCCA student, and be prepared to verify your identity.

  • Walk-up Support
    Students in the Valdosta area can also drop by our IT Helpdesk on the 2nd floor of Odum Library during business hours.

Hardware Recommendations 

The following are only recommended computer hardware and are by no means required. However, those listed would best fit the needs for most educational endeavors.

Processors:

  • Should be rated medium to high; anything lower is not recommended
  • Intel: i5 or i7
  • AMD: Ryzen 7 1700 or Ryzen 7 1800X

Memory (RAM):

  • Minimum: 16GB
  • Recommended:More, if your wallet can handle it. The more memory your computer has, the faster and more adaptive it will run. 

Storage:

  • At least 500GB if HDD (hard disk drive/spinning platter)
  • At least 250GB if SSD (solid state drive)

Wireless:

  • Minimum: 802.11ac or Wireless-AC
  • Recommended: 802.11ax or WiFi-6

Type of Computer:

  • Desktop computer with monitor, keyboard, & mouse
  • Laptops and Operating Systems (OS): Windows and Apple devices are good choices, but familiarity with the operating system you choose is most important
  • Hybrid Tablets, such as the Microsoft Surface Pro, are great for multipurpose use
  • Chromebooks or Netbooks are NOT recommended due to hardware limitations
  • Manufacturing Brand: HP, Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, etc.
  • Vendors: Best Buy, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Office-Max, New Egg, etc.; or directly from manufacture
