AI & Modern Computing
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AT CSET
Go beyond using AI. Understand it.
AI is powerful. Knowing how it works— and when it fails—is even more powerful.
Build the foundation for what's next.
Modern AI grows out of computer science: algorithms, mathematics, programming, data representations, and computing systems. These foundations help students move from using tools to designing, testing, and improving them.
At CSET, AI and cybersecurity appear in current CS and CIS advising track materials. Students should consult advisors to understand available courses and how they fit their degree.
AI is more than a chatbot
Questions students can investigate:
- How does a machine learn from examples?
- How can software recognize patterns in images?
- Why do models make confident mistakes?
- How can we test reliability, bias, and uncertainty?
- How can AI tools support—not replace—human reasoning?

STUDENT PROJECTS & RESEARCH
Exploring AI through student projects.
Students in Valdosta State University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering Technology have completed projects across many areas of computer science and modern computing. Coursework, independent projects, and faculty-guided research provide opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems, experiment with emerging technologies, and develop solutions through programming, testing, and evaluation.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning offer particularly exciting directions for exploration. Students interested in these fields can investigate how computers learn from examples, recognize patterns, interpret information, and make predictions. Just as importantly, they can learn to evaluate model accuracy, identify limitations, and understand why intelligent systems sometimes make mistakes.
Machine Learning & Computer Vision
Explore how computers learn patterns from data and images. Projects in these areas may involve developing classification models, recognizing visual features, measuring prediction accuracy, and analyzing errors.
Intelligent Software & Applications
Combine software engineering with AI techniques to develop useful applications. Projects can involve intelligent assistants, automated analysis, decision-support tools, and software that adapts to data or user needs.
AI Reliability & Responsible Computing
Investigate how intelligent systems behave under different conditions. Explore model uncertainty, unexpected errors, fairness, reliability, and methods for evaluating whether AI-generated results can be trusted.
