The Department sponsors First-year Learning Communities and Special Interest Residential Learning Communities.

First Year Learning Communities (FLCs) provide an opportunity for you to begin your college experience with other students who share similar interest and career objectives. FLCs consist of small groups of 22-25 first-semester college students taking two to three linked courses as a group. Each learning community is designed to ease the transition from high school to college by allowing first-year students acquire educational and social skills crucial to their long term academic success, through an integrated learning environment.

A special interest community is a unique way to get involved with the campus community while building relationships with new friends who share a similar interest. Each special interest community participant lives on a specific themed floor with resident assistants who will provide and work with residents to develop social programs, fun activities, and initiate campus and community projects that make a difference related to their specific interest!

There are a number of documented advantages to learning communities.

  • Learning communities are also positively associated with student gains in personal and social development, practical competence, and general education.
  • Experience with a learning community is associated with higher levels of academic effort, academic integration, and active and collaborative learning.
  • Learning communities are positively linked with more frequently interacting with faculty members, engaging in diversity-related activities, and having classes that emphasize higher-order thinking skills
  • Research results here and at programs across the United States show that students who take part in a learning community earn higher grades, make friends faster, and graduate at higher and faster rates than students who don't participate.

Majors in Communication, Mass Media, Public Relations, and Theatre/ Dance have the opportunity to participate in a Learning Community.
