Welcome to Political Science

Covered Arch

Welcome to the Political Science website! We are glad you have an interest in exploring what our department has to offer. You can find information here about our four undergraduate degree programs: 1) Bachelor of the Arts in Political Science; 2) Bachelor of Arts in Political Science—International Studies track; 3) Bachelor of the Arts in Legal Assistant Studies; and 4) Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership. On the graduate level, the department also provides degrees in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and the Doctor of Public Administration (DPA). Students may also select a minor in Political Science, Legal Assistant Studies, or Public Administration.

The political science faculty members possess a range of specializations as well as backgrounds. Our professors offer a wide number of courses in American politics, public law, public administration, political theory, international relations, comparative politics, and methodology. Also, many faculty members offer courses in a variety of basic courses in the core curriculum.

Another area of distinction is our department’s hands-on learning opportunities and honors organizations. Every year, the department takes a group of students to New York to participate in the National Model United Nations simulation and to Atlanta for the Southern Regional Model United Nations. Similarly, the department has also sent students to a Model Senate simulation. We also have active chapters of Pi Sigma Alpha (honors society for political science) and, beginning in Fall 2016, Sigma Iota Rho (honors society for international studies).

Our faculty are active scholars as well as being excellent instructors in the classroom. Our faculty have published books with national and international publishers, authored articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, regularly presented research at national and international conferences, and are often called on by the media and government agencies as expert analysts and commenters.

Our department prides itself on the international background and experiences of our faculty. Dr. Bamfo is originally from Ghana, Dr. Pufong' s origins are from Cameroon but he grew up in Canada and the United States, and Dr. Glen is from Scotland. Dr. Baun and Dr. Pufong studied abroad in France with students in our department. Dr. Bamfo studied in abroad in England. Also, the department has a long-standing exchange relationship with Palacky University in the Czech Republic and normally takes students there during the May semester. Dr. Harding has studied in Mexico and the UK, presented research in the UK, Canada, Portugal, Germany, and Austria, and has been the director of student study abroad experiences to Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, and Uruguay.

Individual courses reflect the interests and experiences of our faculty members. Students can obtain a solid liberal arts education with a specialization of their own within the field. The department can help open doors to careers and higher educational opportunities for students who possess the motivation and drive. I would like to extend an invitation to tour our campus, visit our department, and talk with our faculty and staff.

Dr. Robert C. Harding
