What are the Principles behind Area "B" of the Core Curriculum? 

The initial development of the Perspectives courses to fill Area B at VSU was motivated by the following goals:

  1. To provide institutional definition in keeping with the University's mission statement that calls for a "scope of influence defined by the needs of a specific region of the state, and by particularly outstanding programs or distinctive characteristics that have a magnet effect even beyond the region."
  2. To provide collaborative teaching and learning experiences in keeping with the University's mission statement that calls for "a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary academic programming."
  3. To satisfy the principles of the University System of Georgia's Core Curriculum, which requires that each institution offer a significant, coherent, and cohesive general education component and that it foster "interdisciplinary learning" and global awareness.
  4. To demonstrate commitment to the University's General Education Outcomes by encouraging a connection between local issues and the demands of a global society.
  5. To provide intellectual reinvigoration and opportunities for creative collaboration.
  6. To provide a venue for courses that are characteristic of programs that fall outside traditional offerings.

Perspectives Courses: Student Information

At VSU, students are required to complete two PERS courses from two different Perspectives Areas.

2.  Perspectives on Tradition and Change (PERS 2200s)
3.  Perspectives on Human Expression (PERS 2300s)
4.  Perspectives on the Environment and Physical World (PERS 2400s)
5.  Perspectives on Race and Gender (PERS 2500s)
6.  Perspectives on Cross-Cultural Understanding and Expression (PERS 2600s)
7.  Perspectives on the World of Work (PERS 2700s)
