VALDOSTA — Logan Mason Kraus of Melbourne, Florida, is the recipient of the 2021 Clare Philips Martin Scholarship at Valdosta State University.

Named for the wife of the late Dr. Sidney Walter Martin, who served as VSU’s fifth president from 1966 to 1978, the Clare Philips Martin Scholarship is presented to a student with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 who is active in both on- and off-campus activities and organizations and has earned a total of 60 academic credit hours or more.

Kraus will graduate cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Minor in Aerospace Studies during VSU’s 231st Commencement at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

As an undergraduate student at VSU, Kraus was a member of the men’s cross country team, where he set a number of personal records and earned Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week and Honor Roll accolades, U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Collegiate All-Academic honors, an athletic scholarship, and the Student-Athlete Spotlight Award. He also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Kraus was a cadet with VSU’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 172 and a member of the Emory Bass Squadron of the Air Force Association’s Arnold Air Society. He volunteered his time at local 5K and Patterson Street cleanup events and at a local gun range.

After graduation Kraus plans to continue his education and pursue a Master of Business Administration at VSU. He will complete his last two years with Air Force ROTC Detachment 172 and continue to compete with the cross country team. His future plans also include earning a master’s degree in social psychology.

Quoting basketball legend Charles Barkley, Kraus said, “If you are afraid of failure, you don’t deserve to be successful. It means that you have to be willing to fail in order to succeed.”
