Madison McArthur Named Top College of Education and Human Services Graduate at VSU

Madison Lynn McArthur

VALDOSTA — Madison Lynn McArthur of Glennville, Georgia, is the recipient of the Spring 2020 President’s Award for Academic Excellence for the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services at Valdosta State University.

The President’s Award for Academic Excellence is presented to the graduating student with the highest grade point average in each of VSU’s six colleges — Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, College of the Arts, James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and College of Science and Mathematics.

McArthur will be recognized during VSU’s virtual 229th Commencement at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at valdosta.edu/commencement. She will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education.

“I was very surprised and delighted to learn that I am the top graduate in the Class of 2020 in the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services,” she said. “I’m overjoyed to see that the hard work of the last four years has paid off. It would not have been possible without the help and support of my professors and my family.”

As a student at VSU, McArthur was a member of the Eta Iota Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, where she served as academic achievement chairman in 2017 and 2018, Parents Weekend coordinator in 2018, and risk reduction chairman in 2019. She was also a member of Kappa Delta Pi: The International Honor Society in Education and Alpha Lambda Delta: The International Honor Society for First-Year Success.

McArthur’s commitment to academic excellence resulted in her earning repeated spots on the Dean’s List. She was also a HOPE Scholar.

McArthur plans to teach at Glennville Elementary School in her hometown while continuing her education through the master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels. She is the daughter of Quentin and Lynn McArthur and the sister of Marlee McArthur.
