VSU Student Government Association Leaders Visit State Capitol

Student Government Association leaders traveled to Atlanta on Jan. 28, to visit the State Capitol and visit with legislators.

VALDOSTA—Student Government Association leaders from Valdosta State University traveled to Atlanta on Jan. 28, to tour the State Capitol and talk with legislators and government leaders on a variety of issues.
House Representatives Amy Carter (175), Jason Shaw (176), John Corbett (174), Dexter Sharper (177), and Jay Roberts (155) introduced House Resolution 50 recognizing Jan. 28, 2015, as Valdosta State University Day at the Capitol.
The visit to the Capitol was an opportunity for the students to learn about state government and promote Valdosta State University’s educational and economic impact to legislators.
“When I was elected SGA vice president in 2014, one of my top goals was to organize Valdosta State University Day at the Capitol," said Nicholas Buford, a junior political science major from Cordele. “We want to use this trip as a learning experience and hope that it turns into an annual event.”
Approximately 40 members of the SGA were given a tour of the Capitol, met with members of the Valdosta-Lowndes County legislative delegation, and passed out gifts to legislators on behalf of the university.
The students were also afforded the opportunity to meet with Chancellor Hank Huckaby and explore issues related to governance and higher education.
“I am delighted that our students organized this event and had the opportunity to interact with our local delegation, Chancellor Huckaby and so many of our state’s leaders,” remarked VSU President William McKinney.
