VSU Fine Arts Gallery Hosts Valdosta National Jan. 21-Feb. 8

VALDOSTA — More than 160 works of art, created by adult artists from a number of different states, were submitted for the Valdosta State University Fine Arts Gallery’s Valdosta National 2014, an all-media juried competition.

For the exhibition, which opens with a reception and an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Carolyn Henne selected 59 works by 35 artists from 18 states to be featured and to compete for some $1,500 in awards. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, Feb. 8, and is sponsored by Citizens Community Bank.

Valdosta National 2014 features “an intriguing collection of visual expression” that includes oil and acrylic paintings, graphite and colored pencil drawings, ceramics, mixed media sculpture, printmaking, video, digital photography, collage, silver gelatin prints, and more, shared Julie Bowland, VSU Department of Art professor and Fine Arts Gallery director.

The “annual national juried exhibition showcases a multitude of media, styles, and sensibilities from across the nation. It is a wonderful indication of the diversity of contemporary art …,” she added.

A sculptor, Henne is chairwoman of the Department of Art and dean of the College of Visual Arts, Theater, and Dance at Florida State University. She is also director of the new Public Art and Architectural Art Specialized Studies Program and head of the Sculpture Area and courtesy faculty in the Department of Medical Humanities in the Tallahassee-based university’s College of Medicine. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University.

The VSU Fine Arts Gallery is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street. The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.
