American Sign Language Interpreting and Deaf Education Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited high school or of a high school that has been approved by the University and must have completed the minimum requirements of the State Dept. of Education for graduation and must complete the required College Preparatory Curriculum. The University System of GA requires that high school graduates complete the College Preparatory Curriculum course work for entrance. In addition, the College Entrance Examination Board’s Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the Assessments Battery of the American College Test Program (ACT) is required of all applicants seeking admission from high school. Applicants must also have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to be considered for admission.
  • Submit an Application to the VSU Admissions Office located on the Admissions website, along with a $40.00 Application Fee and any other necessary papers required. Please Note:  Applications without fees will not be processed.
  • Upon receipt of all required documents, the student is most often notified of an admissions decision within 7-10 business days.

Teacher Education Requirements

  • The student must have:

               ____ a major leading to teacher certification.

               ____ earned at least 30 semester hours.

               ____ earned an overall GPA of 2.75 (for all course work) for all majors

                      (except Communication Disorders, 3.0).

               ____ passed GACE Basic Skills test (or exempted it).
                                 Exemption scores are:
                                        SAT - 1000+
                                        ACT - 43+ (Math + English)
                                        GRE - 1030+ (Verbal + Quantitative)

               ____ Met the Regents' Requirement by appropriate grade in ENGL 1102.

               ____ have purchased Live Text and attended a COE orientation session for Live Text

               ____ successful completion of the appropriate "2999" course.

               ____ complete a criminal background check

               ____ purchase professional liability insurance.

Initial Certification Students

  • Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree and are interested in obtaining teacher certification must meet all of the requirements for admission to teacher education (listed above). Candidates with a master's degree are exempted from GACE Basic Skills Assessment. These students must be admitted as an undergraduate student seeking a second degree although they may choose either a certification plan or the degree program. Inital certification students must contact the Dean's Office for information and admission for teacher certification. Those bachelor's degree and seeking certification must also pass the GACE Content Assessments for their teaching area(s).
