Peer Educator Interest Meeting September 7, 4:00 - 5:00 PM in the Student Union

What we do:

  • We focus on individual and community wellness by creating events that take a holistic approach to further the wellness goals of the university.
  • We strongly believe that as Certified Peer Educators (CPE’s), “I value & know who I am. I am an individual, a friend, an educator, an activist, a role model, & team member. I am a peer educator.” (NASPA CPE Code of Ethics Statement)

How we do it:

  • Sometimes this looks like promoting awareness through campaigns, promoting diversity, and community interconnectedness activities on campus.
  • Other times, it can be educating about resources to peers that can serve as an intervention for high-risk behaviors, talking with peers to help in times of need, coaching and referring to resources, and generally living as a role model to those around us.
  • You may have encountered us during presentations in the residence halls and for student organizations featuring such topics as mindfulness, combating loneliness during COVID-19, sleep hygiene, self-care, stress management, healthy relationships, substance use, STI, as well as other wellness topics.

What this means for you:

  • By becoming a peer educator, you have the opportunity to develop professional skills such as public speaking, team-centric work ethic, and effective listening. You are certified through NASPA's training to call yourself a Certified Peer Educator (CPE).
  • You also have the opportunity to attend the Annual NASPA General Assembly and connect with other peer educators and advisors across the United States.
  • Further training opportunity to be able to establish one-on-one coaching and referral to campus professionals in appointment/office hours setting.

Qualifications for peer educators include, but are not limited to:

  • Listening skills, ability to connect well with others, aptitude for learning, facilitation and presentation skills, time management, and event planning.
  • Pursuing a degree in health promotions, psychology, exercise physiology, nursing, health sciences, social work, biology, or another related field is recommended.

Undergraduate and Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Applicants will receive determination notification within two weeks of applying if accepted. Questions? Email: hhwright@valdosta.edu
