For the Post 9/11 (Chapter 33) GI BILL® or the Vocational Rehabilitation Education Benefit (Chapter 31), the student typically receives a direct monthly payment from the VA and the school receives a payment from the VA for tuition and fee costs.

If a student is receiving either one of these benefits, Valdosta State University provides additional assistance with fee payment deadlines. Instead of waiting on the VA’s payment to arrive on time for the school payment deadlines, VSU will attempt to credit the student’s school account in advance – based on the anticipated amount that the VA will pay.

In order for VSU to provide this courtesy, the following must be completed by the student each semester:

  1. Semester Checklist (https://www.valdosta.edu/admissions/financial-aid/veterans-affairs/semester-checklist-agreement.php)
  2. Submission of an updated Certificate of Eligibility (Post 9/11 GI Bill® students) or a current 22-1905 (Vocational Rehab students).

Based on the information provided, the VSU Veterans Affairs Office and Bursary will then calculate the amount of what the VA will pay the school. This amount is then applied as a “VA Contract Payment” to the student account for the upcoming semester. In addition to this, the VSU VA Office will notify the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) of the student’s class schedule (as long as all courses are confirmed to be a requirement of the student’s major). Once the VA has this information, they will take the necessary steps to process upcoming monthly payments to the student and the tuition/fee payment to the school.

To request a Certificate of Eligibility each semester from the VA, please contact 1-888-442-4551. To obtain a current 22-1905, students should contact their specific Vocational Rehabilitation counselor.
