High School Students Explore Hands-On Chemistry at VSU Summer Camp

VALDOSTA — Area high school students recently spent a week immersed in the exciting world of chemistry during a special summer camp hosted by Valdosta State University. It was an opportunity for the teens to experience chemistry the way scientists do — through hands-on discovery, experimentation, and problem-solving.

Working alongside VSU Department of Chemistry faculty and students, the high schoolers synthesized organic compounds, explored shape-changing materials, learned the process of nickel-plating small objects, and investigated the chemistry of color. These hands-on activities introduced the teens to a variety of chemistry disciplines, as well as demonstrated how chemistry connects to the world around them.

VSU’s annual high school chemistry summer camp is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators by building confidence, fostering curiosity, and encouraging students to pursue future educational and career opportunities in STEM fields.
