Musiteli Mubuso Wins Award for VSU Debate
|The Valdosta State University Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team’s Musiteli Mubuso earned an award for excellence at the 2017 Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament in Boise, Idaho.|
Mubuso competed in the Novice Division of the International Public Debate Association (IPDA) — one-on-one format — portion of the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament. He competed in six rounds and won four of them.
His final competitor was Jaden Allen from Wiley College in Texas. His topic put him on the negative side of “the National Football League should not be tax exempt.”
“There was a lot of energy and passion between the two of us in my final round,” Mubuso said. “It was an exciting debate.”
Mubuso argued that a tax-exempt status would allow members of the public to see the allocation of the National Football League’s profits. He emphasized the importance of keeping the National Football League accountable.
“Though we were just about tied when it came to our passion, I think I beat him with my technical argument,” he said of his opponent. “I had a lot of evidence on the topic that helped me win.”
Mubuso earned an associate degree from Georgia Perimeter College before beginning school at VSU in fall of 2016. He joined VSU’s Forensics (Speech and Debate) Team as soon as he started classes.
“I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself,” he said. “I played competitive sports in high school, and I didn’t see a future for myself in that. I wanted to work on something else, like my ability to speak and think critically.”
Zambian-born Mubuso expects to graduate in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in communication with a concentration in public relations and an Honors College Certificate. He serves as the president of the hall council for Converse Hall, Centennial Hall, and Hopper Hall and is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society for communication students. He works for VSU’s Division of Information Technology.
Mubuso plans to attend law school and become an immigration lawyer or criminal attorney. He would also like to be involved in local government. He is the son of Bornface and Everness Mubuso of Norcross.
