Patrick McElwain Named Employee of the Semester

VALDOSTA – Associate Registrar Patrick McElwain was named Valdosta State University’s Employee of the Semester for Fall 2012. The Office of Registrar works to provide accurate and up-to-date academic records for all students and maintains compliance with governmental, Board of Regents and institutional policies and procedures.

“I was stunned and surprised when I was nominated, but to be named Employee of the Semester is truly a pleasure,” said McElwain, who was nominated by six employees including his supervisor, VSU Registrar Stanley Jones.

As associate registrar, McElwain schedules building and maintenance for academic department heads and oversees grade changes and maintenance and faculty banner web access request forms. He was described by those who nominated him as a “problem solver and perfectionist who commits several weekends and nights to his job.” He has worked at Valdosta State for more than 20 years.

Runner-ups for Employee of the Semester were Sterlin Sanders, desktop support coordinator in the Division of Information Technology and Beverly Porter, secretary for the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice.

Sanders was nominated by his supervisor, Allen DeVane, IT assistant director for Client Support Services. DeVane described Sanders as a “disciplined learner, effective communicator and true techie who has worked diligently to improve the service center.” Several co-workers nominated Porter because of her commitment to raising morale, training other employees, keeping the department current on news and encouraging cooperation.

Other nominees include: Brittany Smith, Valerie Bayman, Rhett Burroughs, Dan Coody, Brett Ganas, Quinn McCormick, James “Joe” Muncy, David Pulliman, Jeremy School, Kanan Simpson, Dwayne Trouille and Pam Vickers.

“These employees exemplify the values of Valdosta State,” said Dr. Denise Bogart, director of human resources and employee development. “They are chosen based on criteria that include innovative ideas, team effort, problem solving and customer service.”

VSU’s Council on Staff Affairs presents the Employee of the Semester Award at the end of every fall and spring semester. All full-time classified staff employees are eligible for the award.
