Mitchell Named Vice President for Finance and Administration

VALDOSTA -- President Patrick J. Schloss announces the appointment of Sue E. Mitchell as Valdosta State University’s vice president for Finance and Administration. Mitchell will begin her position as the university’s chief financial officer on Nov. 8. She is charged with developing and maintaining fiscal policies and internal controls, ensuring the university’s compliance with regulatory agencies, and providing leadership within facility planning and development.

Since 2008, Mitchell has served as vice president for Finance and Business Affairs at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., where she held the rank of colonel. Her responsibilities include the development, implementation and monitoring of the Citadel’s annual budget and serving as the liaison to The Citadel Trust, which manages scholarship funds. She also served as vice president for Business Affairs at Charleston Southern University from 2003 to 2008.

“Ms. Mitchell has a wealth of experience in higher education. Like most who have been engaged in higher education over the past few years, she has become especially keen at creating efficiencies and matching priorities to limited and declining resources,” Schloss said. “I am deeply appreciative of the search committee for their effectiveness in screening more than 70 applications and bringing four outstanding candidates to campus. I cannot remember a more competitive search. The top candidates would fit in at the largest and most complex organizations in the country.”

Mitchell is a certified public accountant. She earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Florida and bachelor’s degrees in marketing and accounting from the University of Central Florida.

“It is a privilege to join Valdosta State’s dynamic team. I share the university’s passion for excellence and embrace the collegial campus environment,” Mitchell said.
