VSU College Bowl Team Ranked Eighth in Nation

Valdosta State University's Quiz Bowl team competed in College Bowl Incorporated's (CBI) National Championship Tournament in Seattle on April 22 and 23.

The team is composed of Captain Justin "Mikey" Alday, junior history education major; Nick Pumphrey, senior history and religion major; David Dickey, junior history major; and Mitch Alday, a junior English major.

VSU finished the tournament and season ranked eighth in the nation. The team concluded with a record of eight wins and seven losses. The team defeated fifth-ranked, University of Illinois, and the region 6 champion, University of Georgia. VSU became the top-ranked Division II team by defeating Harding University.

The Blazers also became the first team to defeat the University of Minnesota, the defending national champion.

"This performance will be good for VSU," said John Wright, assistant director of student life and team institutional representative. "It will allow us to recruit more players in the fall and potentially make a run at a national title, as well as generate more funding for future competitions."

The team expresses its deepest appreciation to all the supporters who contributed to this season's success. For more information about playing quiz bowl for the university or assisting the team, contact Wright at jowright@valdosta.edu or Justin "Mikey" Alday at jmalday@valdosta.edu.
