Valdosta State University’s Campus Activities Board, or CAB, is on a mission to enrich the virtual college experience by offering students a variety of activities designed to promote a bit of fun and a renewed connection to the Blazer Nation community.

When COVID-19 forced Valdosta State University Theatre and Dance to cancel their scheduled performances of “How I Became a Pirate” and “Cats,” as well as their Emerging Artists Series, that left plenty of time for a faculty-student team from the campus-based Costume Shop to start thinking about how they could use their skills and abilities to serve others. They called themselves The Mask Force, and they started by making protective masks for a cancer center in Kansas, where a family member worked.

A little more than 57 hours before the 229th Commencement was scheduled to “go live” on the Web, Valdosta State University invited journalists from various regional news organizations to talk to a pair of graduates and hear their thoughts about all the changes that took place during their final semester of school and the plans they had made to celebrate graduation at home with loved ones.
IN THE NEWS: VSU Faculty, Student Research Team Develops Potential COVID-19 Antiviral
Valdosta State University recently invited South Georgia / North Florida news media to learn more about an antiviral faculty and students from the Department of Chemistry have created to help fight COVID-19. This faculty-student research team has spent the past two months working on this initiative and has developed an antiviral using bacteria from the ocean. The researchers have submitted an application to have their antiviral tested by the National Institutes of Health and are in the process of applying for a patent.

VSU Celebrates 229th Commencement on a Virtual Stage May 9
Valdosta State University will celebrate its 229th commencement with a virtual Graduate School Ceremony and a virtual Undergraduate Ceremony, both at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at valdosta.edu/commencement.

Valdosta State University recently invited South Georgia news media to learn more about a new effort to help students overcome any academic and personal obstacles they may face during the transition from face-to-face, on-campus instruction to online instruction. In addition to embedding tutors in all online courses, VSU has created a concierge coach program that connects students with a university employee completely focused on connecting them to the resources they need to be successful.
