Journalism
Students who choose the journalism English major or minor concentrate in courses that prepare them for careers in journalism and publishing. Journalism courses train students in such areas as news writing, journalism and the law, photojournalism, document design, feature writing, literary journalism, and reporting. Students have the opportunity to gain experience with desktop publishing technology; to work on the staff of the Spectator, the University newspaper; and to intern at area papers. The Spectator won ten Georgia College Press Association (GCPA) Awards at GCPA's meeting in Macon, GA, on January 30, 1999.
The following educational outcomes will be achieved by majors in journalism. English majors in the journalism track will
-
demonstrate a basic knowledge of American, British, and world literatures and an ability to respond to them critically;
-
develop their ability to research, conduct interviews, and write articles of public interest in the tradition of community journalism;
-
learn to edit and design publications;
-
learn the rhetorical principles of journalistic composition as well as the profession's legal and ethical restraints.
