How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?

I experienced a lot of different expectations, styles, and academic requirements that had me quickly adapting to new goals set every semester, something that has really helped me identify and reach the goals set by those I work for now after I’ve graduated.

How has majoring in English enriched your life?

I’ve been writing since I was inthe 5th Grade. Majoring in English transformed rough story ideas and aimless writings into the beginnings of a legitimate career, not just giving me an insight into aspects of English I had never considered, but also allowing me to realize my own weaknesses and work on them.

What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?

Write a lot, but find outlets for writing that aren’t just essays and finals. I wrote a lot of stuff during my college career that may never see the light of day in the professional world, but it kept me from forgetting why I loved writing. Also, be open to the criticism and advice of your peers and mentors and learn from them, but remember that you get to choose what is and isn’t an issue to fix. Sometimes, a red circle and a question mark on a graded paper is just the beginning of your own personal style.
