Letter from the Dean
Welcome to the College of Science and Mathematics! With the increasing complexities of our world, a strong understanding and appreciation of science is critical to tackle the myriad of challenges we face daily. Our department family at all levels (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) are focused on student success, faculty development, and service to our region.
With more than 80 faculty and staff distributed across five departments (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics Astronomy Geosciences and Engineering), our college is well suited to develop tomorrow’s problem solvers. Department coursework based in critical thinking and modern scientific advances prepares our students for a broad range of careers and opportunities. VSU’s AFROTC program (the largest in the state) also calls the college home and offers a minor in aerospace studies. A dedicated advising center provides support throughout your academic career to ensure that you are able to navigate college successfully. Faculty mentors also provide support for students in both their VSU coursework and career plans after college (including graduate and pre-professional programs).
Our college is proud of being a leader in experiential learning opportunities. Participating in activities outside the classroom and teaching lab is no longer the exception but the rule. Multiple opportunities for undergraduate research exist in every department, internships are growing, and study abroad/away programs leave students with experiences they will never forget.
While our current college is still relatively new (celebrating its first anniversary this fall) our collective history at the university runs deep. With this new focused group of departments, we have the opportunity to reach beyond the normal boundaries of academic departments and explore how to better educate our students across the entire STEM spectrum. At the same time, we provide support to our students through a variety of different means, including those led by other students. If you are looking for a place to grow, a place to explore, and a place to thrive, you have definitely come to the right place!
We hope you take the time to explore our site and learn more about the college. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to your joining the college family and adding to our story.
