From the Director

Welcome to the Department of Social Work at Valdosta State University! We are now a member of the College of Education and Human Services.

The Department of Social Work is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and is designed to prepare students for a career in professional social work practice. The advanced generalist curriculum provides students with the knowledge, values, ethics, and skills to engage in multi-level practice with individuals, families, organizations and communities.

Students may choose to complete their graduate work in the way that best fits their personal needs. They may choose the on-campus full-time (2-year) or part time (3- or 4- year) program at Valdosta State University. In this program, they attend night classes that begin each evening at 5:00 p.m. Students who choose to enroll in the web-based, hybrid program attend classes for five intensive weekends each semester, and complete the remainder of their coursework on-line. This combination of intensive face-to-face classes and web-based coursework has proven to be a popular program among students who work full-time or who live at a considerable distance from campus. For more information see Program Options.

The Department of Social Work has an outstanding faculty of ten individuals as well as a group of part-time instructors. In addition to strong academic credentials, all faculty members have practiced as professional social workers, and are knowledgeable about a variety of social work practice settings. Their experience includes the areas of mental health, medical social work, school social work, forensics, geriatrics, the Veterans’ Administration and they have experience with many different client populations. Importantly, they have an outstanding academic record of scholarly publications as well as a record of service to the university and to the profession.

We believe that we offer the very highest quality MSW Program for graduate students, and since the Division began in 1995, we have educated approximately 300 social workers who currently practice in State of Georgia and beyond. I sincerely hope that you will find that our MSW Program meets your educational needs and your career needs.
