b'How Term Limits Changed the PresidencyLauren S. CanadySponsor: Dr. Marc PufongThe purpose of this paper is to look at what presidencies looked like before there were term limits and to see just how much term limits affected presidents. In my findings, I saw that presidents were already treating the presidency as it had term limits because many only served for two terms without running for a third. Since term limits were created, it has maybe affected two presidents who could have possible won a third, but other than that, term limits have kept things in order. Term limits are important for several reasons. One reason term limits are essential in America is because they strengthen democratic institutions. They do this by helping to ensure a peaceful political transition. Another reason term limits are important is because they push leaders to make the changes they promised in an election and deliver results so that they can leave office with a positive legacy. Presidential term limits also ensure that political leaders do not become indispensable. Without term limits, a president could start to look like a king or a dictator. By setting term limits, it helps prevent one person being in leadership for too long. Even if there is a popular president that many people love, term limits ultimately stimulate healthy competition that is needed to improve democratic institutions and the democratic process.61'
