NorthupSponsor: Dr. Maren Clegg-HyerWilliam Shakespeares Measure for Measure is one of the authors most notorious plays, largely due to the suggestive nature of the plot and equally suggestive nature of the characters. Sex holds a heavy presence throughout this play, and for certain characters, a longing for satisfaction drives their actions and results in consequences. This is the case for Angelo, the deputy and potential successor of the AWOL Duke Vincentio. Angelo undergoes severe changes in his psyche upon meeting Isabella, a prospective nun looking to save her brother from being put to death. Angelos sudden change in mental processes can be attributed to his never experiencing the three phases of sexual development as coined by Sigmund Freud, within which a child learns to appropriately control sexual desires. It was not until he met Isabella that these desires were uncovered within himself, and the need to fulfil them became priority over his duty to uphold the law. His thirst for satisfaction threw off what was a well-established tripartite psyche in exchange for one overrun by id, creating a lustful being willing to throw out his morals in exchange for intimacy. 32'
