b'South Georgia COVID-19 Impact StudyWesley A. McCauleySponsor: Dr. D. J. DrakeThe world-wide pandemic that struck in early 2020, has shaped our world like no other event in the past century. In order to observe this impact in the South Georgia area and VSU community in particular, we conducted an impact survey in spring and summer 2020.The survey provides a record of how south Georgians were feeling during the heart of the pandemic. Little was known then about the virus at that time, which is why this study is so vital given our hindsight. This study serves as a comprehensive, in-the-moment overview, of firsthand accounts. It provides an analysis specific to how residents of rural South Georgia felt about the ongoing crisis, which can be compared with future studies focused on other geographical areas. The study delves into vaccines, political differences, gender and age differences, job impact, local changes, and views on releasing inmates during the pandemic. The study indicates distinctions between various demographic categories that show the significant impact the pandemic has had on various groups. In this presentation we will present the data and a subsequent analysis of the South Georgia COVID-19 Impact Study.Analysis of Traffic Flow at Selected Cross-Sections Near VSUDilan R. Boggs Sponsors: Dr. Barry Hojjatie, Mr. Pat Collins and Mr. Larry OgdenA team of researchers and engineers from VSU, Georgia Tech, City of Valdosta and two engineering companies are working on a Smart City Project to make all 128 signalized intersections to be connected through the use of the TravelSafely App. To contribute to a Before and After study related to the application of the TravelSafely App by the road users, we have observed and analyzed the traffic passing at the Union intersection where Baytree Road and North Oak Street intersect to estimate the number of pedestrians, various size cars, and cases with close calls or cases with possibilities of collisions during a specific time of the day at these selected cross sections. We have developed CAD drawings of this intersection to employ visualization in our analyses to describe the flow of traffic specifically during the times that cars are making turns at each intersection while pedestrians are simultaneously trying to cross. These analyses will be used to compare the conditions before and after the use of TravelSafely App to determine the improvement made to the traffic safety and efficiency by the use of the TravelSafely App.53'
