b'Alternative SchoolJustin CarterSponsor: Dr. Lucia Lu, Department of Initial Teacher Preparation and ServicesMy school is an alternative school named Carter Greenhouse/Tech School. It covers 6-8 and 9-12. My grandfather left me some land and he wanted me to open a school for future farmers who want to change the farming culture. My grandfather is a hardworking man. He still has his garden right now full of greens and many vegetables. I would want it to be a public school but the style with Greenhouse and Technology school where the students could learn life skills. At my school we will teach the students the regular courses but also teach them how they can feed one another. Some advantages my school would have is that when the food was grown the students could sell the food and put money back in the school. Another one would be if there was a low produce year, my students would have the upper hand on the other farmers. Now for the technology side of the school, it would be better to plant crops and grow them faster. Also, with the technology, it would teach my students how to stay up to date with the world around them.Homeschooling: alternative schools in AmericaAdam KalivodaSponsor: Dr. Lucia Lu, Department of Initial Teacher Preparation and ServicesHomeschooling is an alternative school system in America and a progressive movement around the country and the world, in which parents choose to educate their children outside of the traditional public schools. Homeschoolers organize their days in whatever way works best for them. Many begin their schooling early in the morning, as in a traditional school, but some opt to make less distinction between school and home. If a child gets excited about a science experiment before bed, some parents follow the childs enthusiasm to see where it leads this becomes part of the school day as well.Advantages of home schooling:Control of curriculum depending upon the state, you can decide the curriculum upon which your child can focus (Mary Brown, Homeschooling: advantages and disadvantages).Pace of learning how long the child spends upon a subject is up to your judgment and the childs capabilityDisadvantages of home schooling:Time homeschooling can absorb a substantial amount of a parents timeFinancial restrictions in order for one person to remain home as teacher, he or she may have to give up their job, effectively reducing the family income.53'
