How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?

Majoring in English set me up for a career in the sports journalism field. I’d always played and been around the game, but choosing English as a major set me on a path to cover sports as a storyteller.

How has majoring in English enriched your life?

Majoring in English has enriched my life by allowing me the platform to build longstanding relationships in my community and within athletics. I am an award-winning journalist and heading into my fourth year as a member of the Valdosta Daily Times and my second year as sports editor. I am very proud of these career accomplishments and I feel blessed for what majoring in English has afforded me in life. Journalism has absolutely changed my life.

What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?

If I could give any VSU alumni or students advice, I would tell them to embrace criticism and make a concerted effort to improve and succeed. I started my college career very undisciplined and my level of focus was inconsistent. I took all of the criticism I received as motivation. Some of it, I took more personally than I should have but it made me a better writer and a better journalist. I wouldn’t trade my time in VSU’s English department for anything.
