Percussion Ensemble

The Valdosta State University Percussion Ensemble performs standard percussion ensemble literature, such as the music of John Cage and Lou Harrison, as well as transcriptions of significant Classical works. The ensemble has hosted many events in the format of a Day of Percussion and has performed at several of the Percussive Arts Society state chapter sponsored events including the Georgia Day of Percussion in Cartersville and Columbus, GA. 

Guest artists have included drum set soloist and clinician Danny Gottlieb and Marimba artist Greg Giannascoli. The Percussion area has also hosted clinicians such as Andy Harnsberger (marimba), Sam Denov (orchestral), Jack Bell (orchestral) and Mark Yancich (timpani).

Steel DrumsSteel Drum Band

The Valdosta State University Steel Drum Band performs traditional Soca and Calypso music and transcriptions of jazz and popular music. The group has travelled as far North as Atlanta, GA and as far South as Panama City, FL. The popular appeal of the band has led to many performances at Government, Civic and private events.

Guest artists have included Matt Britain (of the Britain/ Moore Duo) and Tom Reynolds (pan maker and owner of “Tropical Hammer Co.”).

Yancich Percussion Master Class

While here at VSU as a guest soloist with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, Mark Yancich (Principal Timpanist with the Atlanta Symphony) held a masterclass for the percussion students in the VSU music department. Students who performed were Bailey Hallman, Leslie Smith, William Smith and Rickie Limoges. Mr. Yancich performed James Oliverio's DYNASTY Concerto for two Timpanists and Orchestra along with VSO Principal Timpanist and Professor of Music Dr. J. David Morris.
