VSU to Host 25th Annual Subregion Science Bowl Jan. 30

VALDOSTA – Forty high school students will put their breadth of scientific and mathematical knowledge to the test when Valdosta State University hosts the 25th annual Subregion Science Bowl from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Hugh C. Bailey Science Center.

Eight teams from Appling High School, Bainbridge High School, Lowndes High School, and Valdosta High School will compete against each other in the areas of biology, chemistry, earth science, space science, energy, math, and physics.

Teams will compete two at a time in 20-minute rounds using a quiz-show style system to “buzz in” with the correct answer to earn points. If the team answers correctly, a bonus question will be provided for extra points.

First- and second-place winners will advance to the State Science Bowl, which will be held Feb. 27 at Armstrong State University in Savannah. State winners will advance to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 28-May 2.

The Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. More than 250,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl throughout its 25-year history, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. It is open to middle and high school students.
