The student organization is focused on establishing an internship program with SGMC, and an executive shadowing program for students who are interested in becoming hospital administrators. The 82-member student organization raised funds to benefit the Partnership Health Center Dental Clinic, a program developed by the South Georgia Partnership for Health that provides free dental care for working, uninsured individuals in Lowndes County. VSU’S BETA ALPHA PSI WINS BEST PRACTICE Valdosta State University earned top honors at the 2016 Beta Alpha Psi Southeast Regional Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 27-28. VSU’s Mu Zeta Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi placed first in the Alignment of Officer Activities category during the 2016 Best Practice Competition. “I am immensely proud of our chapter for our continued success in the Best Practice Competition,” said Joseph Trevena, chapter president “We continue the tradition of placing in the top three in at least one Best Practice category since our installation as a chapter in 2009.” VSU’S BETA ALPHA PSI BATTLES HUNGER Valdosta State University’s Beta Alpha Psi took action to fight hunger in the community by accepting Second Harvest of South Georgia’s 2015 Fill-A-Truck Challenge. Hunger is a devastating health, educational, and economic problem that has plagued Lowndes County for decades. September is National Hunger Action Month. Beta Alpha Psi led VSU faculty, staff, students and friends in the fight to make a difference in the lives of the 1 in 4 South Georgians who do not know where their next meal will come from, and many are children who are too hungry to learn. VSU’S ENACTUS- HEART2HEART SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION Valdosta State University’s Enactus and Heart2Heart have partnered with the Lowndes Drug Action Council (LODAC) Inc. to ensure every elementary and middle school student has the materials needed to be successful throughout the academic year. “We believe that having the necessary supplies will increase students’ productivity in school and lead to better outcomes,” said Jasmine Brooks, Enactus president. For more than 20 years as a student organization, VSU Enactus, formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) has continued to represent and reaffirm the international organization’s long-standing commitment to using entrepreneurial action as a catalyst for progress. VSU Heart2Heart is an organization dedicated to bettering the community by mentoring to local youth. Founded in 2008, its mission is to foster the spiritual, intellectual, physical, personal, and social growth of young individuals through various activities, workshops, programs, and recreatonal activities. VSU’S IMA WINS OUTSTANDING STUDENT CHAPTER EXCELLENCE AWARD Valdosta State University has earned the 2014-15 Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Outstanding Student Chapter Award for Excellence. “This is an incredible achievement for any chapter and even more noteworthy given our chapter has been in existence for only four years,’ said Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate dean and professor in the Department of Accounting and VSU IMA faculty adviser. “It is a testament to the fact that the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration students are able to compete with business students from other top tier business programs.” Dr. Gupta and Yekaterina Solomkina, VSU IMA advisor and chapter president, were also recognized by the Institute of Management Accountants at the 16th Annual IMA Student Leadership Conference held November 12-14, 2015 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Dr. Gupta received the Ursel Albers Academic Mentor of the Year Award. Yekaterina Solomkina was awarded the IMA Memorial Education Fund Scholarship in the amount of $1000. The awarding scholarship was based on academic merit, IMA participation, and recommendations. “I am delighted to receive a scholarship from an internationally-known organization,” the 23-year-old from Almaty, Kazakhstan, said. “It feels rewarding to represent VSU on a global scale. This award has definitely helped to boost my motivation for hard work and high standards.” BETA ALPHA PSI IS RECOGNIZED AS A SUPERIOR CHAPTER The Mu Zeta Chapter was recognized internationally by the Beta Alpha Psi Board of Directors as a Superior Chapter. Under the leadership of Mark Wills, professor of accounting and Dr. Ray Elson, SE Chapter Advocate, the Mu Zeta Chapter has far exceeded the baseline requirements of Beta Alpha Psi and has excelled in the areas of academics, professionalism, and leadership. VSU OPENS AN INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE IMPROVEMENT CHAPTER The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an independent not-for-profit organization that is a leading innovator, convener, partner, and driver of results in health and health care improvements worldwide.
