Schizophrenia is considered by many to be a serious mental health disorder, and an excellent example of the importance of understanding both the biological and social (or biosocial) dimensions of causes, prognosis, and treatment in various societies. In other words, the way that mental illnesses are framed or understood within a society plays a large role in how individuals are treated. In addition to examining the cross-cultural literature on schizophrenia, this project will examine the social construction of this disorder in various media. The purpose of this research is to investigate how various cultures categorize, manage/respond to cases of schizophrenia, and how this impacts outcomes for individuals diagnosed with this disorder.61'
