b'Proteins of the Corona VirusEmily Anderson, Anne Stalvey, and Kaylee OQuinnSponsor: Dr. ManningThe coronavirus, first introduced to America in 2020, has two common variants. These are the delta and omicron variants. Most victims of the delta virus report symptoms of loss of taste and smell, fever, cough, sneezing, and other flu-like symptoms. On the other hand, those who have had omicron report more severe symptoms like stomach issues, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle pains. No matter the variant, all coronaviruses are single stranded RNA viruses. Once in the host body, the virus infects a specific cell and multiplies until it bursts. The copies of coronavirus are free to interact with other cells, causing further infection of the body. Even though neutrophils (white blood cells) do their best to attack the alien presence, they cannot help but destroy some healthy cells along with the infected ones. A lack of immunity causes the host to be more likely to obtain other viruses. For a closer look, each coronavirus contains a main and papain-like protein, which aid in the breakage of peptide bonds essential for replication. In total, there are 16 non-structural proteins, four structural proteins, and nine accessory proteins in the virus.Department of Communication ArtsExploring the Relationship betweenStrength Training and ConfidenceRashad A. JeffersonSponsor: Dr. Lynn HoStudies showed that people who do not perform strength training regularly find it harder to perform daily tasks than those who do strength training. Most studies yielded evidence that people are able to better protect themselves from muscular injuries when engaged in consistent strength training. However, whether or not engagement in strength training will increase the confidence in people when performing daily tasks is not clear. Thus, to learn more about this, the current study surveyed participants and have them self-report their attitude toward strength training and confidence levels. The results showed that the degree to which people do strength training exercises is moderately and positively correlated with the degree to which one feels confident after strength training.30'
