About this field

Biology is the study of life and living organisms. Biologists study the five principles of biology including cell theory, gene theory, homeostasis, evolution, and energy and thermodynamics. Biology students at Valdosta State University learn the basic principles of biology, along with the latest developments in the biological sciences, and develop the ability to understand and critically analyze biological issues. Students are prepared for advanced study in a variety of graduate programs and for careers in biology-related fields.

The Valdosta State Difference

Valdosta State’s biology major is one of the most popular programs at the university. Students work closely with faculty members both in the classroom and through research projects outside the classroom. Students can enhance their classroom experience by participating in several student organizations including the Biology Club, the Pre-Professional Club and the Horticultural Club.  An annual research trip to Ireland each summer gives students additional opportunities to hone their skills and interact with faculty. The biology department is housed in a state-of-the-art facility that includes several teaching labs, a computer lab and other fully equipped labs.

What You'll Learn

Students take core and elective classes and are exposed to several areas of biology, including cellular and organismal studies. A large number of courses emphasize principles and concepts and students have the option of choosing one of several areas of concentration. The Bachelor of Science program is designed to prepare students for employment in biology-related fields, as well as for advanced study in graduate school in areas such as biology, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and allied health.
