Department of History Sponsors Photo and Essay ContestVALDOSTA — The Valdosta State University Department of History invites all students, regardless of major, to enter its Polish Traces In The American South photo and essay contest.
Students may participate in the contest by submitting a photo and writing a 300-word essay identifying a historical site in the American South that is important to Polish Americans or that honors the contributions of Polish Americans. The essay should include a list of sources, and the photo should be a minimum of 300 dpi.
Detailed guidelines are available in the Department of History in Ashley Hall Room 1106.
Entries should be submitted to Dr. John Dunn, head of the Department of History and award committee chairman, at firstname.lastname@example.org by Oct. 30.
The winners will be announced at 1 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Odum Library Auditorium during the Centennial of Poland’s Rebirth Conference. The grand prize winner will be awarded $100, and three runners-up will be awarded $50 each.
Contest submissions could potentially help with research for the Polish American Historical Association’s book, tentatively titled “Guide to Polish Historical Sites in North America,” which is scheduled to be published in mid-2020. The winners of the contest will be acknowledged in the book with their full name, and the grand prize winner’s photo and essay will be considered for publication in the book.
The Polish Traces In The American South photo and essay contest is sponsored by the Department of History in collaboration with the Polish American Historical Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1942 that is dedicated to the study of Polish American history and culture.
Contact Dr. John Dunn at email@example.com; Dr. Anna Mazurkiewicz, president of the Polish American Historical Association, at firstname.lastname@example.org; or the Department of History at (229) 333-5947 to learn more.
