About this field

Chemistry majors like you study the materials and energy at the atomic scale. We apply that knowledge to solve real-world problems by making new materials and through a better understanding of the world around us. With a Chemistry Pre-Professional degree, you will problem solve and contribute to the greater good of society in a variety of ways, always with an eye on the next step in your career. With a Pre-Professional Chemistry degree, you will be ready for a career as a nurse and other health care professional, middle school and high school teacher, science journalist, safety officer, laboratory technician, and for many other stable, well-paying, and rewarding careers.

The Valdosta State Difference

As a student in VSU’s Pre-Professional Chemistry degree program, you will work closely with faculty mentors in a student-focused, supportive, and caring environment. The Chemistry Department maintains research-quality scientific instrumentation and laboratory space that you will use to learn and gain practical, hands-on experience. You can even perform your own research with a faculty mentor. Our Pre-Professional Chemistry degree gives you the opportunity to build your resume and, more importantly, prepares you for success in your chosen career. You can join your peers in the student affiliates of the American Chemical Society, an organization that provides educational, financial, technical, and professional opportunities for its members.

What You'll Learn

The Pre-Professional Chemistry degree provides you with a well-rounded education in chemistry while also giving you the chance to learn other subjects that interest you, such as teaching, nursing, and business. Our faculty will share their knowledge with you in all fields - organic, physical, analytical, inorganic, and biochemistry. You will learn theory in the classroom and apply that knowledge in laboratory courses. Yearly seminar series help you learn effective study skills, find an internship, give presentations with confidence, and choose a career.
