B.S. with a Major in Chemistry: ACS Certified Chemistry Degree, Biochemistry Option
- Total Credit Hours: 120
- Degree Format: Traditional
About this field
Chemistry majors like you study materials and energy at the atomic scale and how they affect living systems. We apply that knowledge to solve real-world problems by making new materials and through a better understanding of the world around us. As a biochemist, you will problem solve and contribute to the greater good of society through research and discovery. Graduating students earn a Chemistry BS (Biochemistry option) degree that is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This prepares you for biochemistry graduate school and for employment in industry or government agencies.
The Valdosta State Difference
As a student in VSU’s ACS Certified Chemistry degree program (biochemistry option), you will work closely with faculty in a student-focused, supportive environment. Our faculty are enthusiastic about mentoring students in undergraduate research. The Chemistry Department maintains research-quality scientific instrumentation and laboratory space available for students. This builds your resume and, more importantly, prepares you for an exciting career. You can join your peers in the student affiliates of the American Chemical Society, an organization that provides educational, financial, technical, and professional opportunities for its members.
What You'll Learn
The ACS Certified Chemistry degree with a biochemistry option provides you with the deepest level of understanding biochemistry. Our faculty will share their knowledge with you in all fields - organic, physical, analytical, inorganic, and especially biochemistry. You will learn theory in the classroom and apply that knowledge in laboratory courses. Importantly, you can make your own discoveries as you engage in undergraduate research alongside faculty mentors. Chemistry faculty routinely collaborate on research projects with biology faculty, expanding your opportunities to learn new knowledge and skills. Yearly seminar series help you learn effective study skills, find an internship, give presentations with confidence, and choose a career.
Cost and Length of Program
Students meeting pre-requisites for first-year courses can graduate within four years with an ACS Certified Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with a biochemistry option.
