About this field

English majors are good writers and effective communicators and possess the ability to process complex ideas and understand and successfully communicate with others. The English program at Valdosta State University builds upon the basic knowledge, skills and values provided by the core curriculum while preparing students for a wide range of careers and for graduate study in numerous fields.

The Valdosta State Difference

The Valdosta State English department supports forums for creative, scholarly and pedagogical interests. Students have the opportunity to gain invaluable writing experience by contributing to The Odradek, the university’s student literary journal; The Spectator, the campus newspaper; and Notes on Teaching English, an online teaching journal. In addition, the university hosts the Georgia Poetry Circuit and Blackwater Writing Project.

What You'll Learn

Students in the English program at Valdosta State focus on British, American and world literature and study the cultural and historical context of written works. During the course of their studies, English students perfect their written and oral communication skills and develop keen research abilities. Students choose from one of four English tracks. The literature and language track includes pre-law and pre-theology education and prepares students for graduate studies in English. The journalism track prepares students for careers in print journalism, editing and in-house news writing. Students who choose the creative writing and contemporary literature track are prepared for careers in publishing and related fields and gain a foundation for graduate studies. The professional writing track can lead to careers in law, business, advertising and publishing and prepares students for further graduate studies.
