Hank Rion is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Valdosta State University, where he teaches directing, acting, and audition techniques. He also serves as Artistic Director of Peach State Summer Theatre (PSST), the official musical theatre Theatre of Georgia. At PSST, he has directed numerous productions, including "Million Dollar Quartet", "Mamma Mia!", "Monty Python’s Spamalot", "Annie", and "Little Shop of Horrors", among many others.
As a playwright, Rion’s original work "truth is" has received significant recognition, winning the New York Play Script Award, the ScreenCraft Stage Play Award, and the TNT Pops! Playwriting Award. It was also a finalist for the Del Shores Foundation Playwriting Award and the Austin Film Festival. The play has had two industry readings in New York City, featuring Tony Award–nominee Christiane Noll (Ragtime, Jekyll & Hyde), Hannah Shankman (Wicked Broadway, Funny Girl National Tour), and Eve Kominsky (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway). "truth is" is currently being developed for production by New York Rep and Think Big Picture.
His second play, "The Bleachers", premiered in the summer of 2025 at Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance, and his third play, "in/stalled", is currently being submitted to theatres nationwide. He has also been working on an adaptation of John Webster's 1613 Jacobean Tragedy "The Duchess of Malfi" for the VSU Theatre and Dance season. Fall 2025. Rion is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild, National New Play Network, and the Writers Guild of America (East).
