$ Student Loans Students may qualify for two types of loans: Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans The Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan is need-based and the interest is subsidized (paid) by the federal government while the student is in school and during the six month grace period. Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans The unsubsidized loan is not need-based and was created for borrowers who do not qualify for federal interest subsidies. The Federal Government does not pay any of the interest for these loans. The student either pays the interest while in school and during the six-month grace period or it is added to the balance of the loan. Florida PrePaid Valdosta State University will process your Florida Prepaid plan for you as a third party contract. This allows you to receive Florida Prepaid credit prior to the fee payment deadline reducing your out of pocket cost. You must complete the Florida Prepaid Transfer Form which allows VSU to invoice Florida Prepaid on your behalf. The amount Florida Prepaid covers depends on the plan a parent/student has. For more information visit www.valdosta.edu/florida-prepaid. Restricted Plan Pays a specific dollar amount per credit hour and any balance due is paid by the parent/student if no financial aid award is present. Unrestricted Plan Covers all tuition and fees up to the total plan value. Any remaining balance due is paid by the parent/student if no financial aid award is present. Keep in mind this option will deplete your Florida Prepaid account at a much faster rate. Other Opportunities If you receive the Pell grant, you might be eligible to apply for a Work-Study position. Even if you are not awarded Federal Work Study (FWS), hope is not lost! There are plenty of non-work study related positions available on campus. All positions are posted online at valdosta.peopleadmin.com, or you may contact the Student Employment Office at 229.333.7575. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a requirement for Financial Aid. The FAFSA opens in October and should be turned in as soon as possible. Just So You Know
