South Georgia String Project Classes
The South Georgia String Project offers an after-school music program where children can easily access low-cost stringed instrument instruction while providing mentored teaching experience for music students at Valdosta State University. The South Georgia String Project, led by Director and Master Teacher Lauren Burns, is a joint venture of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and the Department of Music at Valdosta State University.
OUR CLASSES:- Explorer Strings A
- Students must rent or purchase a violin, viola, cello or bass
- No instruments needed
- Ages 8-11, MW 4:30-5:30 pm
- Explorer Strings B
- Second semester class for beginners from Fall 2011.
- Continuing students with more than 6 absences must repeat Explorers A rather than progress to Explorers B.
- Meets MW 4:30-5:30 pm
- Intermediate Strings
- String orchestras for returning and/or experienced string students
- Meet at 5:30 on Mondays in FA 150 and FA 156, according to audition placement
- Additional class at no extra charge, Sectional Technique W 5:30-6:30pm
- Violin Class
- Viola Class
- Cello Class
- Bass Class
- Advanced Ear training class
- Private Lessons are available and strongly encouraged
- Apprentice Student Assistants (underclassmen) offer lessons for $50 per semester
- Student Assistants (upperclassmen) offer lessons for $15 per 30-minute session ($60 per month).
- Students in financial need may complete the aid form and request free lessons with an apprentice or reduced rate ($10 per 30 min) with a student assistant.
- Valdosta Symphony Youth Orchestra (VSYO)
- Full orchestra for advanced string, wind, brass and percussion students: placement by audition.
- Also open to VSU students and community adults
- Participating students must also play in their public school ensembles, if available.
- Meets M 6:30-7:30pm with Matthew Mainella, conductor
