This online graduate program is an initial certification program for teachers who are employed in P-12 classrooms serving students with significant disabilities. The program focuses on increasing teachers’ knowledge and skills in implementing evidence-based interventions to positively impact the learning and behavior of their P-12 learners.
The VSYOU Difference
The program is fully online, with no on-campus attendance requirements. The program courses are taught by faculty who are experienced and knowledgeable in the field of special education and in online instruction. Candidates engage in a variety of applied assignments in their own classrooms to demonstrate their ability to positively impact the learning and behavior of their students.
What You'll Learn
Candidates in this program will learn to:
- Write appropriate IEPs and conduct the IEP meeting
- Assess students’ learning to determine their progress and to make instructional decisions
- Plan and implement a functional curriculum that provides students access to the general curriculum
- Task analyze skills to design appropriate lesson progression
- Appropriately manage students’ behavior
- Address the physical and health care needs of students with multiple disabilities
- Use evidence-based methods of instruction
- Develop augmentative and alternative communication strategies for their students
- Identify and implement appropriate assistive technology
- Communicate appropriately with other professionals to facilitate collaboration
- Use research methodology to demonstrate their impact on student learning and behavior
- Reflect on their own learning and professional development as teachers
- Employment as a teacher of students with disabilities with either (1) an Induction Pathway 4 certificate in special education adapted curriculum or (2) a Standard Professional Teaching Certificate in another field; with a minimum of 20 contact hours per week throughout fall and spring semesters with one or more students who are eligible for special education – adapted curriculum.
- Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on all attempted, college-level undergraduate and graduate coursework.
- A content concentration consisting of fifteen (15) semester hours of academic content that conforms with the GAPSC preparation requirements of content concentrations for middle grades.
- Passing scores on the GACE Program Admission Assessment or documentation of an exemption based on the GAPSC exemption criteria
- Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0
- Attempt GACE Content Assessments
- Receive a composite score on the edTPA performance assessment
